This <strong data-start=\"325\" data-end=\"353\">ultra-low-cost process<\/strong> makes it possible to extract lithium from brines &#8211; for example from deep geothermal energy or as a by-product of natural gas extraction &#8211; in a particularly simple and resource-saving way.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:20px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:34px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;--fontSize:34;line-height:var(--awb-typography1-line-height);\"><h3 data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"556\">How does the process work?<\/h3><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"1073\">The process uses a granular sorbent through which the brine flows slowly. Under conditions of high salt concentrations, lithium binds preferentially to the surface of the sorbent. In the next step, the material is rinsed with fresh water &#8211; this releases the lithium again and extracts it in a highly concentrated form. There, thermal water is extracted from a depth of several kilometers to provide heat for electricity and combined heat and power plants. Our process makes it possible to additionally use this brine flow for <strong data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"1940\">lithium extraction<\/strong> &#8211; without impairing heating operations. This creates a <strong data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2084\">combination of renewable energy production and raw material extraction<\/strong> that makes Germany less dependent on imports and at the same time strengthens value creation in the region.   <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2204\">Outlook<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2205\" data-end=\"2572\">The granting of the patent gives a new boost to lithium extraction in Germany. The process opens up the possibility of extracting lithium directly where brines are already produced as a by-product &#8211; regionally, sustainably and cost-effectively.
